Kurzfassung: Recently, the IT industry has seen an explosion in applications, architectures, and platforms. With the generalized availability of the internet and the appearance of commodity hardware and software, several patterns have emerged that have gained center stage. Workloads have changed. Many applications, including mission-critical ones, are deployed in heterogeneous infrastructures. System z® design has adapted to this change. IBM® has a holistic approach to System z design, which includes hardware, software, and procedures. It takes into account a wide range of factors, including compatibility and investment protection, which ensures a tighter fit with IT requirements of an enterprise. This IBM Redbooks® publication introduces the revolutionary scalable IBM zEnterprise System, which consists of the IBM zEnterprise 196 (z196) or the IBM zEnterprise 114 (z114), the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter® Extension (zBX), and the IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager. IBM is taking a bold step by integrating heterogeneous platforms under the proven System z hardware management capabilities, while extending System z qualities of service to those platforms. The z196 and z114 are general-purpose servers that are equally at ease with compute-intensive workloads and with I/O-intensive workloads. The integration of heterogeneous platforms is based on IBM BladeCenter technology, allowing improvements in price and performance for key workloads, while enabling a new range of heterogeneous platform solutions. The z196 and z114 are at the core of the enhanced System z platforms, which are designed to deliver technologies that businesses need today along with a foundation to drive future business growth. The changes to this edition are based on the System z hardware announcement dated July 12, 2011. This book provides basic information about z196, z114, zBX, and Unified Resource Manager capabilities, hardware functions and features, and associated software support. It is intended for IT managers, architects, consultants, and anyone else who wants to understand the elements of the zEnterprise System. Kurzfassung: The rapid spread and adoption of production storage area networks (SANs) has fueled the need for multiprotocol routers. The routers provide improved scalability, security, and manageability by enabling devices in separate SAN fabrics to communicate without merging fabrics into a single, large SAN fabric. This capability enables clients to initially deploy separate SAN solutions at the departmental and data center levels. Then, clients can consolidate these separate solutions into large enterprise SAN solutions as their experience and requirements grow and change. Alternatively, multiprotocol routers can help to connect existing enterprise SANs for a variety of reasons. For instance, the introduction of Small Computer System Interface over IP (iSCSI) provides for the connection of low-end, low-cost hosts to enterprise SANs. The use of an Internet Protocol (IP) in the Fibre Channel (FC) environment provides for resource consolidation and disaster recovery planning over long distances. And the use of FC-FC routing services provides connectivity between two or more fabrics without having to merge them into a single SAN. This IBM® Redbooks® publication targets storage network administrators, system designers, architects, and IT professionals who sell, design, or administer SANs. It introduces you to products, concepts, and technology in the IBM System Storage™ SAN Routing portfolio, which is based on Brocade products and technology. This book shows the features of these products and examples of how you can deploy and use them.

Kurzfassung: This IBM® Redbooks® publication describes IBM DB2® SQL compatibility features. The latest version of DB2 includes extensive native support for the PL/SQL procedural language, new data types, scalar functions, improved concurrency, built-in packages, OCI, SQL*Plus, and more. These features can help with developing applications that run on both DB2 and Oracle and can help simplify the process of moving from Oracle to DB2. In addition, IBM now provides tools to simplify the enablement process, such as the highly scalable IBM Data Movement Tool for moving schema and data into DB2, and an Editor and Profiler for PL/SQL provided by the IBM Data Studio tool suite. This Oracle to DB2 migration guide describes new technology, preferred practices for moving to DB2, and common scenarios that can help you as you move from Oracle to DB2. This book is intended for IT architects and developers who are converting from Oracle to DB2. DB2 compatibility with Oracle is provided through native support. The new capabilities in DB2 that provide compatibility are implemented at the lowest and most intimate levels of the database kernel, as though they were originally engineered for DB2. means that the DB2 implementation is done without the aid of an emulation layer. This intimacy leads to the scalable implementation that DB2 offers, providing identical performance between DB2 compatibility features and DB2 other language elements. For example, DB2 runs SQL PL at the same performance as PL/SQL implementations of the same function.
