Abstract: "What is the human condition at the dawning of the global age? Drawing upon his own extensive experience, as well as upon the thoughts of Western and "non-Western" scholars and philosophers, Farhang Rajaee provides a fresh and critical inquiry into the nature of globalization." "Globalization on Trial challenges the conventional view that equates globalization with the expansion of the capitalist economic system. With a broad historical and holistic brush, the author presents a view of globalization that is both multidisciplinary and multicultural. What opportunities must we seize? What dangers must we overcome? Rajaee examines human governance and the paradox of globalism and nationalism (or "nativism"), providing a particularly fresh perspective on Islamic civilization. He also focuses on our education system and how it will have to adapt to meet the new challenges of our global, information age." "Globalization on Trial will interest researchers, scholars, and students in the social sciences and, particularly, the humanities; donors, development organizations, NGOs, and development practitioners; and anyone concerned with how globalization and the information revolution are affecting the nature of human civilization, and with the interaction between Islamic and Judeo-Christian (or "Western") civilization. Abstract: Information is universally acknowledged to be a lynchpin of sustainable and equitable development. In Africa, however, access to information is limited, and especially so for rural women. The new information and communication technologies (ICTs), centred mostly on the Internet, provide potential to redress this imbalance. The essays in this book examine the current and potential impact of the ICT explosion in Africa. They focus specifically on gender issues and analyze the extent to which women's needs and preferences are being served. The authors underscore the need for information to be made

Abstract: The conquest of the Americas was the first step on the path to globalization. Today, 500 years later, we are rapidly approaching the prophecied global village and, consequently, natural and cultural uniformity. Abstract: Shared public access to computers and the Internet in developing countries is often hailed as an effective, low-cost way to share the benefits of digital technology. Yet research on the economic and social effects of public access to computers is lacking. This volume offers the first systematic assessment of the impact of shared public access in the developing world, with findings from ten countries in South America, Asia, and Africa. It provides evidence that the benefits of diversified participation in digital society go beyond providing access to technology. Public access venues -- most often Internet caf s in cities and state-run telecenters in rural areas --

Abstract: Undeniably, Asian societies are in a period of transition, when people are learning to live with new information and communication technologies (ICTs) - whether in commerce, government or development work. Living the Information Society in Asia describes the interaction of people and new ICTs as the technologies seep into everyday life, such as how mobile phones forge relationships among families separated by migration, how camera phones threaten personal space, how cultural identities are strengthened in call centres, and how religion is incorporated into the new communication technologies people use. Living the Information society in Asia looks at the phenomenon as it unfolds and raises the implications for policy and future research
