Die kulturtheoretische Aktualität der Kultursemiotik Jurij Lotmans steht im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes. Die teils theoretischen, teils kulturhistorisch angewandten Beiträge namhafter Literaturwissenschaftler (Koschorke, Lachmann u.a.) fokussieren vor allem auf zwei Konzepte: das räumliche Konzept der Semiosphäre, in dem der Peripherie als Zone indeterminierter kultureller Dynamik zentrale Bedeutung zukommt, und das zeitliche Konzept von kultureller Diskontinuität, von Lotman »Explosion« genannt.
