Abstract:
Der Untertitel umreißt das Thema exakt; der Haupttitel bezieht sich auf eine Figur aus Joseph Conrads "Herz der Finsternis". Die freie Journalistin mit vielen Jahren Afrika-Erfahrung wollte "herausfinden, was für ein Mensch Mobutu war, was ihn antrieb" und wie es kam, dass aus einem ursprünglich idealistischen und mutigen Journalisten ein zynischer, verhasster, in ständiger Furcht vor Anschlägen lebender Autokrat wurde. Die breit angelegte Darstellung ist zugleich auch ein Buch über Mobutus Landsleute, doch auch Leser in Nigeria, Kenia und selbst in Aserbaidschan (so vermerkt die Autorin im Vorwort zur deutschen Ausgabe) sehen Parallelen zu den Verhältnissen in ihrem eigenen Land. Ebenfalls in den Bericht einbezogen werden die Nachfolger Mobutus, Kabila Vater und Sohn, und auch die unrühmliche Rolle Belgiens und seines Königs in der einzigen Privatkolonie, die jemals ein europäischer Herrscher sein eigen nennen konnte, wird kritisch betrachtet. Lebendig geschrieben, mit Witz und Sarkasmus, zugleich mit spürbarem Mitgefühl für das Land und seine Mitmenschen.
