Abstract: With the aid of a specially developed model 'The 5 C's Model' expert authors demonstrate how to get your communications right internationally and ensure that meetings, both face-to-face and virtual, go according to plan. Barry Tomalin and Mike Nicks offer strategies and tactics for getting people from different countries on your side, and detailing the knowledge you need to make the right impression and avoid giving offence. The authors provide a framework for understanding any culture in the world, but include specific chapters on the top 10 economies in the world in 2050, according to Morgan Grenfell bank: China, USA, Germany, UK, Russia, India, Brazil, France, Italy and Japan. The 5 C's Model demonstrates how to select the information and understanding you need and how to make sense of it all. The 5Cs are: (1) Cultural knowledge: the basic information you need in order to show interest and familiarity; (2) Cultural behaviour: identifying the basic profile of a country and comparing it with your own; (3) Cultural values and attitudes: what makes a business community tick and what turns it off; (4) Cultural preferences: how to verify your own preferences and compare them with those of the communities you are dealing with. How to anticipate and resolve any problems; and (5) Cultural adaptation: the six key areas of cultural difference where communication can break down. This book gives the reader: a new approach to International business; a business model for international cultural understanding; an insight on how to communicate successfully internationally; a knowledge of cultural expectations; instruction in how to be more culturally sensitive; and highlights the cultural bear traps

Abstract: A comprehensive survey of the key areas of research in cross-cultural communication, based on the authors' experience in organizing and delivering courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students and in business training in the UK and overseas, Offers a deeper understanding of the need for effective cross-cultural communication and cultural awareness by those engaged in working in the international environment. This area is of increasing importance in the diverse and multicultural world where such effectiveness plays a major part in achieving competitive advantage. The emergence of India and China as future economic giants and the increasing influence of globalization have led to greater emphasis on the cultural dimensions of international business, diplomacy and international relations. This volume identifies the barriers to effective cross-cultural communication and suggests practical strategies to overcome them. Key aspects of this include the identification of the skills and competencies required for success, the personnel selection methods and the options for pre-departure cultural training. The authors provide practical examples from their own experience in over 60 countries and from discussion with professional colleagues and international students
