Abstract: The stories and interpretations of participation that make up this book are the result of research carried out during the drafting of the new law on participation, subsequently approved by the Tuscan Regional Authority (L.R. 69/07). The context is presented in two introductory essays that discuss some of the most relevant issues of participation This is followed by a section consisting of thirty-eight factsheets that critically address several of the Tuscan participatory experiences, broken down into five interpretational 'boxes': governance, decisional democracy, participatory planning, social self-organisation and conflict. Emerging from the cases analysed is a variegated landscape of experiences of interactive planning, with lights and shadows, significant results and difficulties, related primarily to the implementation phase of the projects. The authors seek to recount and valorise certain of the more original and innovative pioneering experiences, and to offer food for thought for the greater spread and enhanced efficacy of participatory practices, interactive planning and social self-organisation

Abstract: Today's scenario is characterized by a global connectivity space where uninterrupted streams of information, people, and goods flow, through multi-scale socio-economic processes. All of this requires rethinking well-accepted mental frames as individual capabilities, businesses actions, social and spatial agglomerations evolve in a new and unceasingly changing landscape. This book contributes to the debate on how cities are redefined in relation to the global connective space and the so-called knowledge-based economy. The authors explore the variable set of functional changes, which are intrinsically linked to the multiplicity of multi-scale processes. The book contains the proceedings of the conference "New sciences and actions for complex cities (Florence, Italy 14-15 December 2017)"

Abstract: (Good) government of the consumption of the territory is now one of the most difficult challenges facing planning and all the other sciences that contribute to the design of effective urban and territorial policies. With a view to contributing to debate on such issues, the authors reflect on the new forms of public decision-making, on the potential of territorial equalisation and on other sizing mechanisms, with reference both to the areas under transformation and the consolidated urban contexts. Based on an in-depth investigation of regeneration, requalification and densification projects for urban areas or metropolitan regions in Italy, Europe or the rest of the world, the text suggests various strategies for intervention with reference to the Tuscan case

Abstract: The text proposes several approaches for reflection on the subject of the governance of territorial consumption, addressing two critical issues: the dimensioning of planning and the concept of territory as a common good. The latter is understood as the outcome of cooperative behaviour and interactive practices aimed at recognition of the value of the places and the definition of rules of settlement for the protection of increasingly scarce collective resources. Exploring the relations between the limits of efficacy of the mechanisms for dimensioning the plans and responsibilities of the policies for governance of the territory - increasingly torn between public and private interests and not sufficiently "shared" - the book offers food for thought on the role of a "territorial-size" type of planning in the acknowledgement and management of the common goods
