Abstract:
This book contains up-to-date available knowledge about domestic and international terrorism, focusing on important aspects of terrorism of concern to law enforcement in planning appropriate responses. The first two chapters cover definitions and the history of terrorism. The third chapter explores reasons why people become terrorists, what motivates them to work outside acceptable behavior guidelines, why they engage freely in violence, and psychological characteristics of terrorists and terrorist leaders. Subsequent chapters examine the culture and dynamics of terrorist organizations, the operation of such organizations in the United States, and terrorist tactics and strategies. Other chapters consider weapons used by terrorists, counter-terrorist options, victims of terrorism, hostage situations, and the future of terrorism.
