Abstract: More than fifteen years after the introduction of direct election, the mayors are still the most popular politicians in Italy. The personal relationship set up with the citizens and the strengthening of the city councils has restored energy and stability to the action of the municipal administrations. Nevertheless, these institutional reforms, while important, have failed to guarantee 〈i〉good government〈/i〉. The effects of the mayoral reform are, in fact, considerably different from one city to another, and from one type of policy to another. What does this variety of results derive from? The book provides an answer to this question through an investigation of the decisional processes of around a hundred "local collective assets" in six large metropolitan cities. To explain the different outcomes – in addition to the "council effect", that is, the relevance of policy, and the "sector effect", the relevance of the different decisional milieus – the authors also underscore the role of the "governance effect", namely the different approaches to decision-making and building consensus on urban policies

Abstract: This volume collects the best dissertations from the academic years 1999/00 and 2000/01 by students of the European Master in Work Sciences of the Department of Political Sciences "Cesare Alfieri" in Florence. The contributions focus on the theme of labour and its regulation in European countries, analysing aspects such as work flexibility, training, corporate industrial relations, corporate social responsibility, the promotion of participation of women and disabled people in the job market . These issues constitute privileged points of observation to highlight both the effects of promoting change in the process of European political integration and the role played by the presence of certain institutional architectures related to welfare, economic and work regulation systems that continue to differ from country to country. Looking at the coexistence between stability and change with a multidisciplinary and comparative approach like the one used in the works collected here is like using a kaleidoscope that helps to shed light on the multiple balances and on the different development paths that characterise the so-called "European social model"

Abstract: While an economy is always 'embedded' in society, the relationship between the two is undergoing profound changes in Europe, resulting in widespread instability which is emphasised by the current crisis. This book analyses these changes, and in particular pressures of intensifying international competition, globalisation and financialisation within Europe. Combining the perspectives of economic sociology, political economy and political science, the expert contributors offer an in-depth, multidisciplinary insight to the functioning of a number of institutional arenas around which European econ
