"This book is about teens, teen fans, and how they use mobile technology as a mediator of texts, which they interpret, rebuild and communicate. As tools, mobile devices have revamped social relationships, though face-to-face interpersonal relationships remain important. This backdrop has revolutionised traditional fandom practices of the young, such as the interpretation of texts, civic engagement and the act of fans coming together around an object they feel positive about. Adolescent Fans looks at social and cultural approaches to human development and also studies on the identity and activities of fan communities as a point of departure. Case studies, stemming from the author's participation in these fan communities over a period of 5 years, are covered in depth and analysed from an ethnographic approach, combined with big data analysis in some chapters.
