Abstract: "Wenn sich die Soziologie mit Regionen befasst, ist sie in guter Gesellschaft. Sie macht sich sehr einfache Vorstellungen: ein Name, ein im Raum abgegrenztes Territorium, eine Bevölkerung, eine für einen Beobachter transparente soziale Einheit die Region. Und sie hält gute Nachbarschaft mit der Politik, den Massenmedien, dem Sport und häufig auch der Wirtschaft, wo ebenso gedacht wird. Der Vortrag verfolgt nicht die Absicht, diese Sicht frontal zu attackieren. Dazu ist sie wie jede Semantik der Selbstbeschreibung der Gesellschaft zu sehr durchgesetzte Realität und erbringt Orientierungsleistungen für weite Bereiche des sozialen Geschehens. Aber damit ist noch nicht erklärt, worin der Orientierungswert der Unterscheidung von Regionen besteht und wie Regionen Distanz zu dem Geschehen wahren, dem sie mit Orientierung dienen. Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, verlässt der Vortrag die klassische Epistemologie der Subjekte, die Objekte beobachten. Regionen werden nicht als Dinge betrachtet
