Doch erst die spektakulären Attentate auf hochrangige Staatsbeamte im Italien der 1970er bis 1990er Jahre führten das eigentliche Streben der Mafia unabweisbar vor Augen: die Erringung des Gewaltmonopols auf einem bestimmten Territorium. Ausgehend von theoretischen Reflexionen über die Komplexe Gewalt, Staat und Ausnahmezustand einerseits und von empirischen Materialien zum italienischen Anti-Mafia-Kampf andererseits, löst Martin Ludwig Hofmann das Phänomen der organisierten Kriminalität aus einem rein kriminologischen Zugriff - und erweitert es um eine genuin sozialtheoretische Dimension
