Abstract:
Sandte gestern den Schlagintweit'schen Brief. Zum Abschluß des Berichts, ist sein eigenes Manuskript durchgegangen. Wird den Rest in Abschrift senden. Möchte noch Teile aus Baers Brief vom 20. einfügen. Nachdem er in jüngeren Jahren Cuvier, dann Döllinger und später Johannes Müller nahe getreten war, ist es seine größte Freude, nun noch engen Kontakt zu Baer zu haben. Huxley habe sich in einem Brief ähnlich über Baer ausgedrückt, wie er selbst empfunden habe. Zu seiner Zurückhaltung, eine Zeitschrift zu gründen. Es gebe eigentlich eher zu viele, als zu wenig Zeitschriften, Troschel schlug er als Ausflucht vor. Baer sollte seinen Namen hergeben und mit Voss sprechen. Zu Baers Perspektive in Russland und Deutschland, zur Option hier im Sommer zu wohnen. Zur kulturellen und politischen Situation hier, man feiere das Schillerfest, fröhne dem Materialismus und schieße Lichnowsky und Auerswald tot. Erzählt eine Geschichte über den britischen Historienmaler Haydon, der sich tötete, um keine Almosen von Robert Peel annehmen zu müssen. Das Buch über Soemmerring (Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring's Leben und Verkehr mit seinen Zeitgenossen, 2 Bände, Leipzig 1844) werde er Baer durch Voss senden, gibt ihm eine andere Schrift mit auf die Eisenbahn.
