Abstract:
Germany, Jewish children, biography, history 1871-1918. - Über die Kindheit bei den deutschen Juden in der Zeit des Kaiserreiches ist aus Berichten und Selbstdarstellungen bekannt, daß trotz der antisemitischen Tendenzen in der Bevölkerung meist eine unproblematische Entwicklung in Erinnerung geblieben ist. Erst das seit kurzer Zeit verfügbare Material nötigt den heutigen Betrachter zu einer differenzierten Einschätzung. Die Informationen entstammen den ca. 260 autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen, die jüdische Emigranten im Jahre 1939 anfertigten, als sie sich an einem Preisausschreiben der Harvard-Universität in den USA beteiligten. Diese hatte aus soziologischem Interesse über das "Leben in Deutschland vor und nach 1933" Erkenntnisse sammeln wollen, um Rückschlüsse auf die Zustände der Deutschen unter Hitler gewinnen zu können. Eine Gruppe von Lehrenden und Studenten haben diese Aufzeichnungen, die in der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg zur Verfügung stehen, mit Bezug auf die Kindheitserlebnisse ausgewertet. Antisemitismus gehörte zu einer bedeutenden Erfahrung der oft verklärten Kaiserzeit bis zum ersten Weltkrieg
