Abstract:
En 1846 paraissait à Istanbul la traduction turque du Livre du Soudan œuvre d'un cheikh tunisien nommé Muhammad, fild de 'Alî, fils de Zayn al-'Âbidîn.Les recherches entreprises depuis lors pour retrouver le manuscrit de l'original arabe et s'assurer de l'existence même de l'auteur sont demeurées totalement infructureuses.Si ce mystérieux personnage a dit vrai, la quête des sciences ésotériques l'aurait mené en Égypte, puis en Nubie er, pour finir, au Waday, lointain royaume musulman aux confins du Tchad et du Soudan actuels. Sa connaissance de la grammaire arabe et du droit canonique, ainsi que l'expérience acquise au cours de ses voyages, auraient fait de lui le conseiller écouté du souverain local. Expert pédagogique, diplomatique et militaire, le cheikh Muhammad aurait aussi mené des fouilles dans un site "antique" dont la description fait encore rêver bien des archéologues. A la mort du roi, il serait retourné dans son pays natal, chargé de richesses et accompagné de jeunes esclaves noires, pour y jouir d'un repos bien gagné.Si le cheikh fabule complètement, ou n'a fait qu'en partie tout ce qu'il prétend, il convient de le tenir pour un contuer éblouissant, faux Marco Polo des cafés maures, qui sait admirablement doser le merveilleux, le suspense, l'humour et des considérations sentencieuses sur la vanité des chose. Son récit fascine encore à travers la présente traduction qui, par diverses transpositions de style et de niveaux de langage, tente d'en restituer fidèlement le ton savoureux. (Klappentext)
