Abstract: In this IBM℗ʼ Redbooks℗ʼ publication, we discuss CICS℗ʼ, which stands for Customer Information Control System. It is a general-purpose transaction processing subsystem for the z/OS℗ʼ operating system. CICS provides services for running an application online where, users submit requests to run applications simultaneously. CICS manages sharing resources, the integrity of data, and prioritizes execution with fast response. CICS authorizes users, allocates resources (real storage and cycles), and passes on database requests by the application to the appropriate database manager, such as DB2℗ʼ. We review the history of CICS and why it was created. We review the CICS architecture and discuss how to create an application in CICS. CICS provides a secure, transactional environment for applications that are written in several languages. We discuss the CICS-supported languages and each language's advantages in this Redbooks publication. We analyze situations from a system programmer's viewpoint, including how the systems programmer can use CICS facilities and services to customize the system, design CICS for recovery, and manage performance. CICS Data access and where the data is stored, including Temporary storage queues, VSAM RLS, DB2, IMS⁴́Ø, and many others are also discussed.

Abstract: The popularity of the Internet and the affordability of IT hardware and software have resulted in an explosion of applications, architectures, and platforms. Workloads have changed. Many applications, including mission-critical ones, are deployed on a variety of platforms, and the System z℗ʼ design has adapted to this change. It takes into account a wide range of factors, including compatibility and investment protection, to match the IT requirements of an enterprise. This IBM℗ʼ Redbooks℗ʼ publication discusses the IBM zEnterprise System, an IBM scalable mainframe server. IBM is taking a revolutionary approach by integrating separate platforms under the well-proven System z hardware management capabilities, while extending System z qualities of service to those platforms. The zEnterprise System consists of the IBM zEnterprise 114 central processor complex, the IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager, and the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter℗ʼ Extension. The z114 is designed with improved scalability, performance, security, resiliency, availability, and virtualization. The z114 provides up to 18% improvement in uniprocessor speed and up to a 12% increase in total system capacity for z/OS℗ʼ, z/VM℗ʼ, and Linux on System z over the z10⁴́Ø Business Class (BC). The zBX infrastructure works with the z114 to enhance System z virtualization and management through an integrated hardware platform that spans mainframe, POWER7⁴́Ø, and System x technologies. The federated capacity from multiple architectures of the zEnterprise System is managed as a single pool of resources, integrating system and workload management across the environment through the Unified Resource Manager. This book provides an overview of the zEnterprise System and its functions, features, and associated software support. Greater detail is offered in areas relevant to technical planning. This book is intended for systems engineers, consultants, planners, and anyone wanting to understand the zEnterprise System functions and plan for their usage. It is not intended as an introduction to mainframes. Readers are expected to be generally familiar with existing IBM System z technology and terminology.

Abstract: DB2℗ʼ 10 can reduce the total DB2 CPU demand from 5-20% when you take advantage of all the enhancements. Many CPU reductions are built in directly to DB2, requiring no application changes. Some enhancements are implemented through normal DB2 activities through rebinding, restructuring database definitions, improving applications, and utility processing. The CPU demand reduction features have the potential to provide significant total cost of ownership savings based on the application mix and transaction types. Improvements in optimization reduce costs by processing SQL automatically with more efficient data access paths. Improvements through a range-list index scan access method, list prefetch for IN-list, more parallelism for select and index insert processing, better work file usage, better record identifier (RID) pool overflow management, improved sequential detection, faster log I/O, access path certainty evaluation for static SQL, and improved distributed data facility (DDF) transaction flow all provide more efficiency without changes to applications. These enhancements can reduce total CPU enterprise costs because of improved efficiency in the DB2 10 for z/OS. DB2 10 includes numerous performance enhancements for Large Objects (LOBs) that save disk space for small LOBs and that provide dramatically better performance for LOB retrieval, inserts, load, and import/export using DB2 utilities. DB210 can also more effectively REORG partitions that contain LOBs. This IBM Redbooks℗ʼ publication℗ʼ provides an overview of the performance impact of DB2 10 for z/OS discussing the overall performance and possible impacts when moving from version to version. We include performance measurements that were made in the laboratory and provide some estimates. Keep in mind that your results are likely to vary, as the conditions and work will differ. In this book, we assume that you are somewhat familiar with DB2 10 for z/OS. See DB2 10 for z/OS Technical Overview, SG24-7892-00, for an introduction to the new functions.

Abstract: For more than 50 years, IBM® mainframes have supported an extraordinary portion of the world's computing work, providing centralized corporate databases and mission-critical enterprise-wide applications. IBM z™ Systems, the latest generation of the IBM distinguished family of mainframe systems, has come a long way from its IBM System/360 heritage. Likewise, its IBM z/OS® operating system is far superior to its predecessors in providing, among many other capabilities, world-class and state-of-the-art support for the TCP/IP internet protocol suite. TCP/IP is a large and evolving collection of communication protocols that is managed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an open, volunteer organization. Because of its openness, the TCP/IP protocol suite has become the foundation for the set of technologies that form the basis of the internet. The convergence of IBM mainframe capabilities with internet technology, connectivity, and standards (particularly TCP/IP) is dramatically changing the face of information technology and driving requirements for even more secure, scalable, and highly available mainframe TCP/IP implementations. The IBM z/OS Communications Server TCP/IP Implementation series provides understandable, step-by-step guidance for enabling the most commonly used and important functions of z/OS Communications Server TCP/IP. This IBM Redbooks® publication is for people who install and support z/OS Communications Server. It introduces z/OS Communications Server TCP/IP, describes the system resolver, and shows the implementation of global and local settings for single and multi-stack environments. It presents implementation scenarios for TCP/IP base functions, connectivity, routing, and subplexing.

Abstract: This IBM℗ʼ Redbooks℗ʼ publication reviews the CICSPlex℗ʼ SM Web User Interface (WUI). We first give an overview of CICSPlex SM and the WUI. In Chapter 2, "CICSPlex SM installation" on page 13, we show an installation for first time users of CICSPlex SM and the WUI for CICSPlex SM V3.2. Chapter 3, "CICSPlex SM migration" on page 55, concentrates on how to migrate to CICSPlex SM V3.2. We discuss the migration best practices and show a migration step-by-step. This book also reviews the default menus delivered with the CICSPlex SM WUI and describes scenarios where these views could be used. We also discuss view modification and customization, focusing on such things as favorites and how to use the view editor. This book contains a chapter on problem determination. In that chapter we discuss problems that may be discovered and fixed using the CICSPlex SM WUI. Typical problems that we concentrate on are problems with files and in storage, as well as usage of the history facility. In the final few chapters of this book we look at CICSPlex SM security and describe how to implement SSL in the CICSPlex SM WUI. The last chapter of this book gives the reader some hints and tips on problems encountered, and considerations when using the CICSPlex SM WUI.
