    Abstract: Annotation, Die auf breiter internationaler Quellen- und Literaturbasis erarbeitete Monographie erortert die Entwicklung der politischen, rechtlichen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen, kulturellen und militarischen Konfliktgemeinschaften in den bohmischen und sudslawischen Landern Osterreich-Ungarns, die epochalen Erschutterungen des Ersten Weltkrieges und den Bruch der Tschechen, Slowaken und Sudslawen mit der Habsburgermonarchie, die schwierige Bildung der Nachfolgestaaten, die Innen- und Aussenpolitik der Tschechoslowakei und Jugoslawiens, die Zerschlagung der Friedensordnung von Versailles/Saint-Germain/Trianon durch Hitler, die NS-Eroberungs- und Besatzungspolitik in Bohmen, Mahren, Serbien, Bosnien-Herzegowina und Slowenien, den Volkermord an den Juden im Protektorat, in der Slowakei, im Ustasa-Staat und in Serbien, die Vergeltung an den und die Vertreibung der Sudeten- und Karpatendeutschen sowie der Deutschen in Slowenien, Kroatien und der Vojvodina, schliesslich die Erinnerung und Historisierung der mehr als 100-jahrigen Konfliktgeschichte ostlich und westlich des Eisernen Vorhangs und in den post-kommunistischen Nationalstaaten am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts in Ostmittel- und Sudosteuropa. Im Mittelpunkt stehen einerseits die ethnisch-nationalen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Deutschen und Tschechen, Slowaken, Serben, Kroaten und Slowenen sowie zwischen Magyaren und Slowaken, Serben und Kroaten, andererseits die staatlich-nationalen Auseinandersetzungen des Deutschen Reiches und Osterreichs mit der Tschechoslowakei und Jugoslawien. Obwohl in der 150-jahrigen historischen Entwicklung Ostmittel- und Sudosteuropas seit 1848 eine Reihe von Kaisern, Konigen, Prasidenten, Kanzlern, Ministerprasidenten, Ministern, Grossunternehmern, Generaldirektoren, Botschaftern, Generalen, Gauleitern und Hoheren SS- und Polizeifuhrern als Akteure auftraten, sind es drei Personen, die auch in der historischen Erinnerung am Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts noch immer prasent sind: der deutsche "Fuhrer" und Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), der tschechoslowakische Aussenminister und Prasident Edvard Benes (1884-1948) und der jugoslawische Partisanenfuhrer und Prasident Josip Broz Tito (1892-1980)

    Abstract: By applying a comparative approach the volume focuses on a select group of „empires“ which are generally not in the focus of empires studies. They are studied in detail and analyzed due to a strict concept that takes into account real history and reception history as well. Reception history becomes more and more an important element in empire studies although this topic is still often more or less underdeveloped. The volume singles out a series of such “forgotten empires”. It aims to provide a methodologically clearly structured as well as a uniform and consistent approach. It develops a general set of questions that help to compare and distinguish these entities. This way the volume intends to examine and to illuminate empires that are generally ignored by modern scholarship. The Editors Michael Gehler is professor of history at the University of Hildesheim and Jean Monnet Chair for European Integration Studies, as well as Senior Fellow at the Center of European Integration Research/University of Bonn, Germany. Robert Rollinger is professor of ancient history and ancient near eastern studies at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, as well as Visiting Professor at the University of Wrocław, Poland (2021-2025) holding the NAWA Chair “From the Achaemenids to the Romans: Contextualizing empire and its longue-durée developments”.
