Abstract: Chagossians have struggled for compensation and the right of repatriation since they were expelled from the Chagos Archipelago (the British Indian Ocean Territory)to make way for a major US military base on Diego Garcia. In 2006,British and Mauritian authoritiesarranged for them a humanitarian visit to their homeland - now a restricted militarized destination to which both governments claim sovereignty. Based on anthropological fieldwork among their community in Mauritius, the Seychelles and the UK, this study examines the context and performance of this journey to analyze the Chagossian diaspora, their international political struggles, and the history, role and position of their community within Mauritius’ multi-ethnic society. The study shows how the journey was re-defined as a pilgrimage, and how this particular way of framing and performing movementcan form a significant political strategy in a globalizing world much defined by a variety of physical and metaphorical mobility.

Abstract: The Shilluk Collection covers a wide variety of cultural and historical information, circa 1900 to 1990. The earliest and most comprehensive source in the collection is the ethnographic survey by C.G. Seligman and Brenda Z. Seligman, covering political organization, kinship, family life, marriage system, religion and funeral customs as observed in 1909-1910. The collection also includes Evans-Pritchard's classic essay on the divine kingship of the Shilluk, and two summary articles by professional anthropologists working with the International African Institute. Other works in the collection include brief ethnographic descriptions, articles and manuscripts that appeared in scholarly journals and records of the Anglo-Egyptian colonial administration. Topics covered in the collection include religious and medical beliefs, folklore, settlement pattern, social organization, customary laws and succession to kingship
