    Abstract: Gebrauchsweisen der Bilder - so konnte man den thematischen roten Faden benennen, der sich durch die hier versammelten Texte zieht. Dem Prinzip der Interventionen folgend, wurde dieser thematische Fokus nicht anfanglich bestimmt; er ergab sich nachtraglich und spiegelt damit auch die Arbeitsschwerpunkte und Interessen des Instituts fiir Th- rie der Gestaltung und Kunst (ith). Es geht hier nicht primar um die grundlegenden Fragen der Bildtheorie, die sich mit dem Wesen des B- des, einer Ontologie und/oder einer Kulturanthropologie der Bilder - schaftigen, sondern um »Bilder an der Arbeit«. Die Aufmerksamkeit richtet sich auf konkrete Arbeitssituationen, in denen Bilder eine RoUe spielen und aus denen sich Fragen ableiten lassen beziiglich der Fu- tionen und Bedeutungen, die den Bildern zugewiesen werden, und der Art und Weise, wie mit Bildern verfahren wird. Wichtig ist, dass wir uns dabei nicht auf den Kontext der Naturwissenschaften konzentrieren, einen Themenbereich, der in den letzten Jahren eine bemerkenswerte Konjunktur erlebt hat - nicht immer, wie uns scheint, zu Gunsten einer kritischen Bildtheorie. Uns interessiert vielmehr, welche Fragen die Kultur- und Geisteswissenschaften an die Bilder stellen, wenn sie deren Auftreten und Agieren in der Wissenschafts- und Alltagskultur sowie in der Kunst und im Design beobachten. Die einzelnen Beitrage sind denn auch in unterschiedlichen Kontexten veranlasst.
