Abstract: Information is universally acknowledged to be a lynchpin of sustainable and equitable development. In Africa, however, access to information is limited, and especially so for rural women. The new information and communication technologies (ICTs), centred mostly on the Internet, provide potential to redress this imbalance. The essays in this book examine the current and potential impact of the ICT explosion in Africa. They focus specifically on gender issues and analyze the extent to which women's needs and preferences are being served. The authors underscore the need for information to be made

Abstract: "What is the human condition at the dawning of the global age? Drawing upon his own extensive experience, as well as upon the thoughts of Western and "non-Western" scholars and philosophers, Farhang Rajaee provides a fresh and critical inquiry into the nature of globalization." What dangers must we overcome? Rajaee examines human governance and the paradox of globalism and nationalism (or "nativism"), providing a particularly fresh perspective on Islamic civilization. Abstract: This guidebook zeros in on what indigenous knowledge can contribute to a sustainable development strategy that accounts for the potential of the local environment and the experience and wisdom of the indigenous population. Through an extensive review of field examples as well as current theory and practice, it provides a succinct yet comprehensive review of indigenous knowledge research and assessment. Working with Indigenous Knowledge will contribute to the improved design, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of any program of research and will appeal to both seasoned development professional as well as the novice or student just beginning a research career.

Abstract: Aimed at development planners and students of nutrition, public health, anthropology, and human cultural ecology, this book discusses issues surrounding the use of natural sources of food for the prevention of vitamin A deficiency. During a 2-year process guided by the Committee on Nutrition and Anthropology of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, a protocol was developed to evaluate natural food sources of vitamin A in areas at risk for vitamin A deficiency. This book describes the creation of the ethnographic research tools and their testing in a broad range of cultures and environments in five developing countries. Chapters contributed by research managers in these countries describe the suitability and reliability of the research tools, the data generated, practical applications, and directions for future policy. Many examples are given of helpful new information for planning programs at the local level for alleviating vitamin A deficiency

Abstract: This book presents pioneering research that is designed to show, from a qualitative and ethnographic perspective, how new information and communication technologies, as applied to the school system and to local governance initiatives, merely reproduce traditional pedagogical approaches and the dominant forms by which power is exercised at the local level. The studies thus constitute points of departure for further thinking about the need to promote an Internet culture based on the social application of a "right to communication and culture" and an "Internet right," that will permit the establishment of true citizen participation and free access to knowledge, with due regard to personal and individual rights such as those of privacy and intimacy.
