Abstract:
The Ethiopian military began to seize control of the country in March 1974 and desposed Haile Selassie I the following September. The authors provide a balanced analysis of the step-by-step process by which the 120-man anonymous military committee came to power. The complex interrelation of law and politics is focused upon in a case study of a revolutionary socialist regime coming to grips with commen Third World crises of legitimacy, stability, justice, popular participation and legal penetration. Radically different policies are being pursued through new apporaches to law in the area of "constitutional " law and penal law and procedure. Ethiopia socialism is being implemented through business natonatisation, urban land reform and agrarian reforms. Detailed appendices - many of which have previously been available only in Amharic - document the authors's findings. (Umschlagtext)
